Spindel Supplement
| In the Fall of 1981, Murray Spindel
enrolled in Hoke Robinson's philosophy course on nineteenth century
philosophy. At
the conclusion of the semester, Murray asked what
he might do to contribute to the department. Out
of his love of philosophy, an annual conference
was established. Murray
continued to attend philosophy classes each
semester and was a valued voice in the
intellectual life of the department as well as a
steadfast friend. Everyone who has been
affiliated with the University of Memphis
Philosophy Department during these years, along
with many Spindel Conference participants, has come to know and
love both Chris and Murray. On July 7, 1999, Murray succumbed to
cancer. Each year, the conference features topics of current interest in the various fields of Philosophy. The conference is directed by a member of the faculty in Philosophy at the University of Memphis. The director chooses the topic and invites speakers who have done important work in the area. During the conference, Chris Spindel invites attendees to her home for a barbecue supper in her lovely garden. The Spindel Supplement to The Southern Journal of Philosophy is a published supplement of the conference proceedings. The supplement is included in the regular subscription or is available separately at a cost of $16.00. Listed below are the conference topics and directors; the table of contents for each Supplement is available by following the link.
